Kadala Curry

Ingredients

  • FOR COOKING CHICKPEAS
  • 3/4 cup Black Chickpeas (Kala Chana)
  • 2 cup water for soaking black chickpeas
  • 2.5 cup of water for pressure cooking
  • FOR GARAM MASALA
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seed (saunf)
  • 2 to 3 strand of mace (javitri)
  • 3 pinch of nutmeg powder (jaiphal powder)
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick (dalchini)
  • 3 cloves (laung)
  • FOR COCONUT PASTE
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 cup for grinding coconut
  • OTHER INGREDIENTS
  • 1/3 cup of chopped pearl onion (sambar onion)
  • 1 teaspoon chopped ginger
  • 1 or 2 green chillies chopped
  • about 12 curry leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilly powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

To pressure cook chickpeas Rinse and soak the black chickpeas in 2 cups of water for 8-9 hours

Step 2

Take the chickpeas in pressure cooker add water to it. overall water should be 2.5 cup. You can use soaked water as well. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Step 3

Pressure cook the chickpeas for 10-12 whistles. It should be tender after cooking

Step 4

Preparing Coconut Paste take 1/2 cup of grated coconut and grind it with 1/4 cup of water to smooth paste

Step 5

Preparing Garam Masala In small pan dry roast fennel seed, mace, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg powder in the above mentioned quantity. Just a light roasting

Step 6

grind the roated combinated to semi fine powder

Step 7

Preparing Kadala Curry

Step 8

Heat 2 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan

Step 9

Add 1/2 tsp of mustard seed and crackle

Step 10

Add 1/3 cut of chopped onion; stir and saute for a minute

Step 11

Add 1 tsp of chopped ginger, 1 tsp of chopped green chilies, curry leaves and saute till onion turns light brown

Step 12

add 1 tsp of red chili powder, 1tsp of coriander powder, 1/4 tsp of black pepper powder and ground garam masala.

Step 13

Stir masala very well and saute for a minute on low flame

Step 14

Add coconut paste and stir very well. Saute on low flame for about 5 mins

Step 15

Now add cooked black chickpeas, stir very well

Step 16

Add 1 cup of water and salt to taste. Stir it again

Step 17

Let it come to a boil and gravy reduce a bit.

Step 18

Serve hot with Puttu.
